Mifuko was founded in 2009 by two Finnish designers inspired to combine modern nordic design with traditional Kenyan handcraft and fair trade. Mifuko collaborates with artisans in Kenya, Ethiopia, Tansania and Ghana empowering women and making them less dependent on unpredictable farming as a source of income. Guided by core values of sustainability, social responsibility and joy, Mifuko seeks to create timeless design with high quality materials. A proud member of WFTO (World Fair Trade Organization) Mifuko has established a trust called Wash and Grow promoting the rights of communities to clean water, sanitation and livelihood with a special focus on women and girls. Mifuko's baskets are handwoven from either paper, sisal, elephant grass, palm leaves or recyled/upcycled plastic.
