"My interest lies in the beauty of raw clay and mark making to add movement and texture to the surface of the piece - like water, wind and sand."
Tania Whalen is a ceramic artist originally from London currently based in Brooklyn. Having worked in various areas in fashion in London, Tokyo and NY, she had her first taste of working with clay fourteen years ago and fell in love with the practice!
She takes inspiration from forms in nature, architecture, and ancient art forms. Creating work for both functionality and beauty, she honors the identity of the medium she works with and its root in the natural world, while aiming for a modern sensibility in her pieces. All vessels are hand built primarily employing the pinch & coil method. Irregularities in forms, glazes, drips and finishes are embraced and add to the beauty of the handmade object, each piece being completely unique.
